Division 1 Superkart3s – Silverstone 9th June 2011

SN1 7080c-300x200

Gavin Bennett Two wins to start his championship

season plus the ‘0’ plate for winning the UK Cup.

The twin cylinder Superkarts were also sharing track time with the MSA Superkart Championship at Silverstone for the opening rounds of their championship and the UK Cup.

Qualifying

The familiar face of Gavin Bennett claimed pole position with a time of 54.990s. He was joined on the front row by European Superkart Champion Lee Harpham (55.411s). Although not registered for the championship he decided to use this meeting as a warm up ahead of the Grand Prix. Third quickest was Liam Morley (55.883s) with existing UK Cup holder Chris Needham (56.083s) alongside.

Race 1

Gavin Bennett blasted away from Harpham at the start and led by 0.383s at the end of the opening lap. Morley and Needham were side by side with Bramhall and Gjertsen completing the top six. Division 1 debutant Jason Dredge dropped out on the first lap with a gearbox problem. Bennett put in the fastest lap of the race on lap 3 and established a two second lead by lap 6. However, a lot of traffic and yellow flags allowed Harpham to close up and at Brooklands on lap 12 he made a move for the lead. Bennett just held him off for the next 4 laps before Harpham outbraked him into Brooklands on lap 16. They started the last lap side by side but Bennett gained the upper hand and crossed the line to win by 0.325s. Needham picked up a puncture, which made it difficult to stay on track and allowed Morley to get ahead. Morley then had an easy run to the flag when Needham retired with a broken ignition pick-up wire.

Race 2

Bennett made another quick start and had an advantage of 0.872s at the end of lap one. Harpham slotted into second place ahead of Needham, Gjertsen, Bramhall and Morley. Bennett wasn't going to hang around this time and pulled away to win by 5.159s. "I knew that if I could get an early break, I would be able to hold off Lee and Chris." Two wins to start his championship season plus the '0' plate for winning the UK Cup.

The race for second place kept everyone on their toes. Harpham got out of shape under braking into Brooklands on lap 4 and allowed Needham to get ahead. Four laps later they were side-by-side through Brooklands and then had to fight their way through five slower karts. The traffic allowed Harpham to open up a gap over Needham who then had to fight off Morley in the closing stages. Bramhall was fifth at the flag just ahead of Dredge. "I picked up a puncture on lap 6 but am glad I finished. A huge thanks must go to Graham Barker who gave up his time and supplied parts to rebuild my gearbox after race 1."
