Just a quick note to inform everyone of an accident I had at the weekend (apologies to those who already know). The crash was at the final round of the European Superkart Championships at Assen in Holland on Sunday.
Unfortunately I have a broken right foot (avulsion fracture of 5th metatarsal). I consider myself very lucky given the severity of the accident. I will be on crutches for a while and should make a full recovery in 6 - 8 weeks.
I came around the full speed (145mph) Ramshoek corner unsighted behind Trevor Roberts. When Trevor moved to the left I saw Thomas Johansson touring very slowly with a stopped engine. I moved to the left to avoid him but I was hit from behind by Rob Chilcott. This steered my kart right again directly into Thomas' rear bumper. My on-board footage shows that it was just an unavoidable racing accident.
The impact was very hard (closing speed of around 100mph, my data will confirm when I download it) and it broke my chassis rails. Thomas was very
lucky. He was spun around so violently that he was thrown from the kart. Thankfully no-one hit him. He has a bruised shoulder and feet and is also on
crutches but he says he has no lasting injuries.
Ironically, I had planned to sell my kart directly after Assen to raise budget for new equipment for 2010! Maybe my scrap dealer will be interested - £50??!
Anyway, as I say, I think I'm quite lucky considering. As I see you all I'll show you the on-board footage if you'd like. I'm not putting it You Tube because it's not very good publicity for the sport of Superkart and there are a lot of guys working really hard to promote it in a positive light - don't want to ruin that, it was a rare racing accident.
All the best,
